How to Loosen and Protect a Rusted Trailer Hitch
Double-Duty Protection: Penetration and Lubrication in One
Silikroil breaks down the rust and corrosion bond that locks hitch components together. At the same time, the silicone formula deposits a protective lubricating layer that guards against future seizing. A single treatment can restore a locked hitch to smooth operation and keep it that way through extended outdoor exposure.
Soaking time is the key variable with a seized hitch. Results are often evident within 15 to 20 minutes of Silikroil application. A receiver or ball mount that has been locked up for a full season or longer may require multiple applications over several hours. The approach is always the same: apply, wait, and let the chemistry do the work before applying any mechanical force.
How to Free a Seized Trailer Hitch
- Apply Silikroil directly into the receiver tube opening, around the ball mount shank, and through the locking pin channel.
- Allow a minimum of 20–30 minutes of soak time. Re-apply if components are still locked after the initial soak.
- Work the ball mount or pin with steady, moderate force. Avoid hammering or using impact tools until the penetrant has had time to work.
- Once components are free, clean away any rust residue and old grease from contact surfaces.
- Apply a fresh coat of Silikroil before reinstalling, and again at the start of each season.
The best time to treat a trailer hitch is before it seizes. A seasonal application of Silikroil in the spring and fall takes just minutes, and prevents frustration and potential equipment damage down the road.
